Queensland’s 2025 Free Flu Vaccination Program
We are pleased to support the Queensland Health initiative by participating in the 2025 Free Flu Vaccination Program. This program aims to increase vaccination rates across the state and reduce the impact of influenza on our community.
Key information about the 2025 program:
- Commencement: The free vaccination program began on Saturday, March 1st, 2025, as vaccine stock became available.
- Full Supply: While some vaccines were available from the start, full supply is expected by April 2025.
- Conclusion: The program will run until Tuesday, September 30th, 2025.
- Recommended Timing: For optimal protection during the peak flu season (typically June to September in most of Australia), it is recommended to get your annual flu vaccination from April onwards. However, vaccination can continue as long as flu viruses are circulating and a valid vaccine is available
Why Get a Flu Vaccine?
The annual flu vaccine is the most effective way to protect yourself against influenza. Here’s why it’s so important:
- Reduces your risk of getting sick: The vaccine helps your body develop antibodies that fight against the specific flu viruses circulating each year.
- Prevents serious complications: Flu can lead to serious health issues, including pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus and ear infections, and can worsen chronic medical conditions. Vaccination significantly lowers the risk of these complications, hospitalisation, and even death.
- Protects vulnerable individuals: By getting vaccinated, you also help protect those who are more susceptible to severe flu, such as young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions. This concept is known as “community immunity.”
- Reduces the spread of the virus: Even if you do get the flu after vaccination, your symptoms are likely to be milder, and you’ll be less likely to spread the virus to others.
- Helps keep you healthy and productive: Avoiding the flu means fewer missed days of work, school, or other important activities.
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
The Queensland Government recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone aged 6 months and over.
The following groups are eligible for a FREE flu vaccine under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and the 2025 Queensland Free Flu Vaccination Program:
- Children aged 6 months to less than 5 years
- All adults aged 65 years and over
- Pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over
- People aged 6 months and over with certain medical conditions that increase their risk of severe influenza and its complications, such as:
- Cardiac disease
- Chronic respiratory conditions (including severe asthma)
- Chronic neurological conditions
- Immunocompromising conditions
- Diabetes and other metabolic disorders
- Chronic kidney disease
- Haematological disorders
- Children aged 6 months to 10 years on long-term aspirin therapy
