What are risk factors for skin cancer?

There are several risk factors that increase your chances of developing skin cancer, these include: 

  • Fair skin & light eyes: lighter skin tones have less melanin, offering less natural protection against UV rays
  • Sun exposure: excessive sun exposure, including sunburns in a major risk
  • Tanning beds: artificial UV radiation from tanning beds is just as harmful as natural sunlight
  • Personal history of skin cancer: having skin cancer in the past increases your risk of developing it again
  • Family history of skin cancer: having close relatives with skin cancer increases your risk
  • Weakened immune system: certain medications or conditions can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible.
