Following our in depth skin examinations, if a suspicious lesion is identified, we promptly discuss your treatment options. These may include:

Non-surgical treatments:

  • Cryotherapy: freezing the cancerous tissue with liquid nitrogen.
  • Curettage & electrocautery: scraping the cancer cells and cauterising the area with an electric current.
  •  Topical medications: creams or ointments to treat superficial skin cancers.

Surgical treatments:

  • Excision: removal of the cancerous tissue with a margin of healthy surrounding skin.
  • Skin grafts: replacing the removed skin with healthy skin from another part of your body.
  • Flap surgeries: moving nearby skin and tissue to reconstruct larger areas affected by cancer removal.

At SunMed Skin & Medical we tailor your treatment based on your individual needs and take into consideration the type and stage of your cancer, along with your overall health and preferences.

Understanding Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Australia, affecting millions of people each year. Fortunately, when detected early it’s highly treatable. There are three main types of skin cancer that we screen for at SunMed Skin & Medical:

  • Basal cell carcinoma: the most common, typically slow growing and rarely spreads.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: less common than basal cell carcinomas, but can grow faster and spread if left untreated.
  • Melanoma: the most aggressive type of skin cancer, early detection is crucial for successful treatment.
Skin Cancer Check & Management FAQs

What are risk factors for skin cancer?

There are several risk factors that increase your chances of developing skin cancer, these include:

  • Fair skin & light eyes: lighter skin tones have less melanin, offering less natural protection against UV rays
  • Sun exposure: excessive sun exposure, including sunburns in a major risk
  • Tanning beds: artificial UV radiation from tanning beds is just as harmful as natural sunlight
  • Personal history of skin cancer: having skin cancer in the past increases your risk of developing it again
  • Family history of skin cancer: having close relatives with skin cancer increases your risk
  • Weakened immune system: certain medications or conditions can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible.

How can I prevent skin cancer?

Sun protection is crucial! Limiting sub exposure, wearing protective clothing and using a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50+ daily are essential preventative measures.

What happens after a biopsy?

Following a biopsy the tissue sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results typically take a few days to arrive, and your Doctor will discuss the findings and next steps with you.

What should I look for when performing self-examinations?

Look for any changes in size, shape, colour or border of your moles or lesions. Any new bleeding or itching spots should also be checked. If you notice a suspicious mole or lesion, schedule an appointment with the team at SunMed Skin & Medical.

Do I need a skin check even if I have no concerns?

Yes, regular skin checks are recommended for everyone regardless of any current concerns. Early detection is crucial for successful treatment, and skin checks can help identify even subtle changes that you may miss.
